All Packed Up

My backpack is zipped-up and ready to go: 3 pairs of pants, 4 shirts, a few pairs of socks, my walking sandals, my brown belt, my black belt and shoes (in a nod to vanity,) camera, phone, minimal toiletries, some moolah, my prayer book and psalter, and my pocket journal. Yep, I'm ready to go. I'll be reporting back in early July.

Oh -- and where do I send my cheque for the John's Guide to Packing Light course?

Ian, you can send the cheque directly to me! I have 2 rules that I adhere to. The first involves carrying fewer clothes, but keeping them washed as you travel. I simply throw the dirty clothes onto the floor of the shower, throw a bar of soap down there, and scrub them around with my feet while showering. I then wring them out and hang to dry while I am out during the day. So, I carry fewer clothes and just keep them washed (if wrinkled.) The other item is more basic. If you look closely at my list, you will notice that there is one item of usual clothing that is omitted. If traveling alone, there are an unncessary complication. Another trick is to not carry any guidebooks. I copy the pages I need, half-size. Then recopy, front and back, so that I end up with 16 pages of a guidebook on 1 sheet a paper. 2 sheets of paper usually does it. And speaking of books...I always used to carry books to read--which I never opened. So, I do not do that anymore.

Want to wish you safe travels full of wonder! Wish for you to have a great time, a silent time here and there, and a good journey.

FWIW, I stretched for some Patagonia this spring and some Hudson (?) pants... all these are backpacker stuff and roll up small for those of you who want to pack light. It's the layering thing. Great for travel and basically any conditions. On the otherhand... they don't look like much. Reasonable if you don't need much... or if you look at it as enabling you to do what you want, when, and how you want. But very quick drying ... etc. etc. etc. So I'm converted... to this "stuff". Maybe I should start a blog for it?

Have a great trip.
