Perry-Free Zone
I have been concerned for some time now that the casual visitor to this blog might be frightened away by the sudden image of a grinning Rick Perry in the previous post. I decided to post something a little less threatening--and what could be more soothing that baby chicks?
I was being released from a 6-day stay in the hospital at just about the same time that Governor Rick was rolling out his Big Announcement. I suppose this passes for news in these dog days of summer, but to listen to the television talking heads, one would think that the race was now all but over. Four days into his official candidacy, however, things are looking a little differently, which fits with my overall prediction for Perry and the race in general. But still, visions of a 3rd Bush term (just without the intellectualism) have, I feel, hindered my recovery. And so, for the foreseeable future at least, and in the interest of my mental health and spiritual well-being, I am declaring this blog a Perry-Free Zone.

Hospital?? Are you okay?
Well, I am now ;) Briefly, w/o going on about it: blot clot in leg goes to left lung (fortunately, I suppose, rather than the alternatives). Now on blood-thinners and all that stuff. Back at work and regular routine.
Many prayers.
Dang, John. Just wait until you get past the younger side of middle age. ;-)
Kirk, I know, I know. That's what so strange about all this. I've heard of this sort of thing happening before--but only to old people ;)
Was this at all related to the ankle you had broken and the plate/screws?
Many prayers have been said on your behalf...and you are hereby not allowed to scare folks in this fashion ever again, you hear?
Speaking of chickens, have yours held out ok in this brutal heat?
Yikes! Glad you are home and healing. Prayers indeed.
Kirk,
Nope--other leg.
Becky,
Thanks. I tell people I was too clueless to be scared myself. This summer has been particularly brutal on my chickens. Even with the shade I've provided, lots of water and a box fan (yes), I have still lost 4. The guineas and the peafowl seem to be surviving just fine, however.
Mimi, Thanks! Good to hear from you.
Well I feel a bit the heel considering all the serious content in this comment thread, but I have to say this this post is the funniest thing I read today, and the chick pic puts it over the top!
(I'm glad you are recovering well.)
Personally, I would have found a half dozen photos of Amy Adams more soothing than any chickens!
Prayers for your health, John!
And prayers for this country and the mess into which we are about to enter: presidential election season. Concerning Perry, I've been reading about a movement that he, Michelle Bachman and others on the evangelical right are involved in: Dominianism. Here is an interesting article from the Daily Beast/Newsweek:
Very interesting reading...
I am glad you are well, Terry.
John (T.C.) -
Sorry to hear about the clot . . . but glad to hear you are on the way to recovery. Hopefully not one of those things that will seriously impact long plane trips in the future as your travel writing is among the best!
I have found the best antidote to the election race, and other ills, has been Jon Stewart. Whether you like him or not, it's still pretty funny:
Here's his rant on the media, even Fox News, ignoring Paul - surely the antidote to the Perry nonsense:

And here is a great rant about the "poor":

Glad to hear you're better.
Sooooo... just so I have this right, you're saying I could take Rick Perry in Scrabble?
Hilarius,
Thanks for links. I laughed until I cried. And the main thing keeping me from flying these days is not my blood-clotting, but my finances, if you know what I mean. There's hope for next year, so we shall see.
JtT,
I would definitely be in your corner of a Scrabble match with He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. Recently, there was an article addressing his grades in college--mainly C's and D's. I'm not putting too much emphasis on that, as I did not do so well in my undergraduate years, either. But then, I'm not running for President.
